FAQ’s about Styling
1. What Does a Stylist do?
Simple, they STYLE!
The definition for the word “Style” is to follow a particular procedure to do something, and to give a distinctive appearance/form which is typically determined by principles of design. This is true of Hair Stylist and Stylist who work in the Fashion Industry.
A Stylist is a professional who will assist and advice a client (individual person or company) about clothing choices and accessories to help them achieve their goals. This can range anywhere from:
- Organizing a wardrobe efficiently
- Advising them on trends that will assist their sense of style.
- Putting together looks for everyday or special events.
- Helping an individual to shop for items.
- And more....
2. Are there different types of Stylists?
Yes!
Every stylist tends to specialize in an area that they love and have the skills for.
Just like Doctors are specialist in certain fields, so the same is true for Stylist. You don’t really want to go to a dentist when you have broken your leg, they may be able to help… but not as much as you needed.
These are some of the big areas that stylist work differently in:
- A Wardrobe Stylist can be working behind the set on theater productions or TV.
- A Fashion Stylist is mostly someone who works in photoshoot either for magazines or other publications and sometimes with celebrities in PR (sometimes called a celebrity stylist).
- Runway Stylist works with designers to put together looks for fashion shows and works with set designers to help the fashion house tell a narrative.
- A Personal Stylist/Brand/Image consultant tends to work with an induvial to help them achieve their unique sense of stylist. This is what we specialize in at Amanda Leigh Style. Though I’ve had previous experience in doing many of the other field of styling and design.
3. What’s the difference between a Fashion Designer and a Fashion Stylist?
Good question!
In general, a Fashion Designer is involved in creating garments (choosing fabrics, sewing, designing), where as a Fashion Stylist is more involved in elevating their client, using fashion to put ‘looks’ together for them. Both have overlapping skills, but they are utilized differently daily.
4. How much do Stylist charge?
The cost of a stylist will vary depending on your location, the extent of service offered, how much time is needed and their experience level. On average you will expect to pay between HKD$600- HKD$2000 per hour (approx. USD$75-250). Every stylist is different, so it’s important to find the one that is the right fit for you. Just like making a new friend, finding someone who you connect with and can trust is VITAL!
Here are a few recommendations on what you can do to find you ideal match with a stylist:
- Ask a friend for recommendations or a referral. You can also read some of our testimonials HERE.
- Research them! Have a look at their blog/website/social media/ect to see if it connects with you and if it’s along the line of what you would like to achieve.
- Make time for a Consultation. For us, this is a 45min chat to get clear on how we can help (HERE to book). If it feels like the stylist understands what you would like help with an has a clear plan on how they can assist to achieve this for you, then they could be a great stylist for you.
6. Will everyone benefit from the expertise of a stylist?
Yes, and no!
The key is not everyone WANTS a stylist. I personally believe that EVERYONE could benefit from a stylist, but if you’re not open to working with a professional then you probable won’t get the most out of the experience. And that ok!
Did you know that even some working Stylists have a staff of stylist to help them style themselves?!?
Stylists are not just for celebrities and the rich.
A stylist can help with:
- A need to boost confidence (where knowledge and skill will make an impact)
- Techniques to achieving a look and feel that is: younger, slimmer and healthier (or all 3).
- Feeling your best no matter your age, size, or lifestyle.
- To minimise the stress felt when deciding on “what to wear” or “where to shop”? (and help to implement techniques to stop decision paralysis)
- Saving money in your wardrobe and improve your spending habits
- Figure out how to make more sustainable choices.
- Improve time efficiency everyday by making sure your wardrobe in aliened to your style and lifestyle.
A Stylist should not be telling you that you are wrong and have to throw out your entire wardrobe..... on the contrary! It’s about helping you to create new possibilities, explore more options and update your wardrobe to create a system that works for YOU!
