Rediscovering Your Style Postpartum

Becoming a parent is a life-altering experience that brings immense joy, but it also comes with its own set of challenges. For many new mothers, postpartum life can feel like a whirlwind of change, both physically and emotionally.

That's why Parallel 51 hosted a workshop “Style & Wellness Mama Event” with Amanda Leigh Style along side Ziggy-of Zig Fitness. We, and our communities, are passionate about helping postpartum moms rediscover their personal style and boost their confidence.

Understanding the Postpartum Experience

The journey to parenthood is often described in terms of trimesters (1,2 and 3), but the fourth trimester—the postpartum phase—is just as crucial and is often NOT spoke about!

During this time, mothers experience significant hormonal fluctuations, sleep deprivation, and societal pressures to "bounce back" to their pre-baby selves. It’s a period of profound transformation, but often lacks support.

Much like the story of the flamingo loosening its vibrant color after laying an egg and caring for a chic, it can take up to 2years for them return to their original and vibrant PINK! The same is true for us human Mama's.

Dr's say that it takes woman's body 2 years to fully recover from pregnancy and delivery. But new research shows, it takes up between five to seven years to fully reach ‘normal’ hormone levels and things to stabilise. Recognising this, and embracing these changes is essential in EVERY postpartum journey.

Here is a guide on how to feel more supported in the journey:

STEP 1: Embracing Your New Self

Self-love and acceptance are critical in this phase. Many women can quickly list what they dislike about their postpartum bodies, but it's equally important to focus on what you LOVE/LIKE. By redirecting attention to positive attributes, you can begin to see yourself in a new light.

Identifying your body shape and understanding your new lifestyle are key steps in this process. Clothing should work for YOU, not against you. It should accommodate your evolving body and lifestyle, allowing you to feel comfortable and confident as you navigate parenthood.

STEP 2: Personal Style

Once you have a grasp of your silhouette and lifestyle needs, it's time to explore your personal style. Reflect on how you want to be perceived and what you want to express through your clothing. A style assessment, whether through a questionnaire or a mood board, can help you visualize your style goals.

Wardrobe essentials are crucial, especially when time is limited. Investing in versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched will make dressing up more manageable and enjoyable.

STEP 3: Building a Functional Wardrobe

A functional and stylish wardrobe begins with a closet audit. Declutter items that no longer serve you, and focus on pieces that fit well and make you feel good in the present. Shopping smart, with an emphasis on quality over quantity, ensures you have a wardrobe filled with timeless, effortless pieces.

Fashion doesn't have to break the bank. Exploring budget-friendly options, like those available at Parallel 51, can enhance your wardrobe without straining your finances.

Boosting Confidence Through Style

The psychology of fashion reveals that clothing can significantly impact mood and self-esteem. A single dress can be transformative, as illustrated by a client of mine who only needed one perfect dress to regain her confidence and seize a professional opportunity.

Client Story:Have you often found yourself postponing something you truly want to do because obstacles keep popping up?

You are not alone!

Story time:

"I recall working with a client in 2021 (pandemic time) in Hong Kong. We met while in the local playground, when our children were playing together. She told me she was a Human Rights lawyer on maternity leave and once she discovered my service, was thrilled! expressing that she desperately needed assistance with what to wear to get back to work! The next time we met, she was three months pregnant. Although she was eager to return to work together, she kept saying, “Can you help me once my baby is born?” followed by, “Wait until I shed some of the baby weight.” Then her husband faced redundancy, prompting her to seek a job while wanting to remain in Hong Kong. It wasn't until she accepted the idea of moving back to Europe that we finally scheduled a session, as she realized it was “now or NEVER!”

We spent four hours sorting through her wardrobe and another three hours shopping. In the end, she bought just one dress. But that dress was transformative! It was only once we she had that fabulous dress in the wardrobe, that she noticed an email from an old colleague, and took the opportunity to replied. She ended up wearing THE dress to a coffee meeting with him, and was excited!

When I followed up with her afterward, she exclaimed, “Amanda, we talked for 30 minutes, and he offered me a job!” This was someone who had tried to reach her for twelve months, but she had always ignored his messages because she felt she had nothing appropriate to wear! It was only after she had that dress that she noticed the email and responded! It may have been just a dress, but it changed everything for her!"

So it’s never ‘just’ about clothes. It’s about not being held back, and finding the confidence to be yourself!
