In the world of corporate attire, black often reigns supreme. It’s the go-to colour for many professional women looking to convey authority and professionalism. However, there is a vibrant world of colour waiting to be explored that can enhance personal style and boost confidence. Recently, I had the pleasure of hosting a styling workshop at the Frey Store in Central, aimed at helping corporate women embrace and enjoy the spectrum of colours available to them. Here’s a recap of the session and some key takeaways for those looking to add a splash of colour to their professional wardrobe.

Introduction to Color Exploration
The workshop commenced with an engaging introduction by Chelsea Perino from the Women’s Leadership Initiative (Asia Division), during which participants were invited to share their favourite colours and the reasons behind their selections. Following this, they were asked whether these colors appeared in their clothing choices. Notably, 70% of participants indicated that black was the predominant colour in their wardrobes, as it serves as a foundational element for a corporate uniform. This icebreaker encouraged women to reflect on their personal connections to color and assess its relevance in their lives.
Our objective extended beyond mere enjoyment; we sought to empower participants to explore the significance of colour, recognising that intentional use of colour can be a powerful tool.
Understanding the Basics of Colour
One of the essential components of the session was a thorough exploration of the fundamentals of colour theory. We examined the notion that color perception varies among individuals due to cultural and biological influences. The discussion included the scientific principles underlying colour perception, emphasising the primary colours—red, blue, and yellow—and how their combinations yield the extensive spectrum of colours we experience. A key takeaway was the importance of identifying whether a colour is warm, cool, or neutral, as this knowledge is crucial for selecting hues that enhance an individual's natural undertones.
Identifying Your Undertones
The workshop also emphasised the importance of identifying one’s undertones, a vital step in determining which colours best enhance an individual's natural beauty. Participants were taught to analyse the colour of their veins and their preferences in jewelry to ascertain whether they possess cool, warm, or neutral undertones. This understanding serves as a foundation for selecting base colours that enhance personal style, ultimately fostering greater confidence in exploring colour that works for them and their personal brand.

Incorporating Colors
With a solid understanding of colour theory, we moved on to practical tips for incorporating colours into corporate attire:
Mixing and Matching: Embrace versatility by starting with neutral basics and adding colorful accents.
Layering: Use layers to balance consistency and variety in your wardrobe.
Accessorizing: Accessories like scarves and earrings are powerful tools for adding color.
Statement Pieces: A bold blazer or print can be a statement piece, bringing personality to an outfit while maintaining professionalism.
The Art of Proportion
The workshop emphasised the importance of proportion in wearing colour. How you wear colour—whether it's a small accent or a bold primary piece—can make a significant impact on your overall appearance. Even the amount and placement of colour can have a big impact on how you are perceived, rather than just the colour chosen. The key is to find the right balance for a to a polished and professional look.
Conclusion and Continuing the Journey
The session concluded with an engaging open Q&A, allowing participants to share insights and pose questions. The workshop encouraged women to continue experimenting with colors and provided valuable resources for further exploration, including the Amanda Leigh Style Guide and Workbook, as well as Online Personal Styling Consultations. Participants had the opportunity to shop for items at the Frey store and enjoyed the experience of trying on pieces they may not have otherwise considered.
By the end of the workshop, attendees felt empowered and inspired to delve into the colorful world of fashion, enhancing both their professional image and personal style. For those who were unable to attend, I hope this recap motivates you to embrace color in your corporate wardrobe and discover the transformative power it can provide. Enjoy your journey into the vibrant realm of fashion!
A special thank you to all the staff at the Frey store for takeing photos and organising the event!
